On February 14, 2019, a terrorist attack occurred in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir in India. A suicide bomber belonging to the Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) drove a vehicle filled with explosives into a convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel. The attack resulted in the deaths of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and injured dozens more. The attack was one of the deadliest in the history of the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and led to outrage and condemnation across India. The Indian government held JeM responsible for the attack and vowed to take strong action against the group and its supporters. In response to the attack, India carried out airstrikes against a JeM training camp in Balakot, Pakistan, on February 26, 2019. This was the first time in decades that India had carried out airstrikes across the Line of Control (LoC) that separates Indian and Pakistani-controlled parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan denied that the strikes had caused any damage or casualties and responded by carrying out its own airstrikes against Indian military targets the following day. The two countries were on the brink of war, with tensions remaining high for several months after the attack. The Pulwama attack and the subsequent military escalation between India and Pakistan drew international attention and condemnation. The United Nations Security Council issued a statement condemning the attack and urging all countries to cooperate in the fight against terrorism. Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, also condemned the attack and called for restraint and dialogue between India and Pakistan. The Pulwama attack also had political implications in India, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using the incident as a campaign issue in the 2019 Indian general election. The BJP's strong response to the attack and its claims of being tough on national security helped the party secure a decisive victory in the election. In conclusion, the Pulwama attack was a tragic event that resulted in the deaths of dozens of Indian security personnel and caused tensions between India and Pakistan to escalate. The attack highlighted the ongoing conflict in Jammu and Kashmir and the threat posed by terrorist groups such as JeM. The attack also had political implications in India, with the BJP using the incident as a campaign issue in the 2019 election. The incident underscores the need for continued efforts to combat terrorism and to promote peace and dialogue between India and Pakistan.
